March 2012: Frank Kava, PT, MS, OCS, OMPT, attended a course at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City about the conservative management of knee osteoarthritis.  The course covered various techniques in osteoarthritis management as well as different therapies and equipment that can be used for treatment.

 

November, 2011-March, 2012: Dr. Kristie Kava is currently teaching a Rehabilitative Pilates class as part of a research study conducted by the Wayne State University School of Physical Therapy.  The study is comparing the effects of Pilates versus Yoga exercise on subjects with neck pain.

 

December, 2011: Frank Kava, PT, MS, OCS, OMPT, attended the 23rd annual total knee course hosted by The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.  The course looked at the benefits for both surgical and non-surgical treatments for knee arthritis.

 

October, 2011: Dr. Kristie Kava co-presented a workshop for The Boston Symphony Orchestra regarding the importance of effective posture and body awareness in reducing muscle strain, pain, and overuse injury in the instrumental musician.  The workshop took place at Symphony Hall in Boston, MA.

 

October, 2011: Linda Erickson, PT, MS, OMPT was honored to be nominated by the Michigan Physical Therapy Association Special Interest Group for Clinical Education for the Cindy Kincaid Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award, which is given annually.

 

September, 2011: Oakland Physical Therapy is very pleased to welcome Cortney Gibson, DPT, back to our staff!  Cortney is a graduate of Grand Valley State University's physical therapy program and interned at Oakland Physical Therapy through her final clinical instruction.  Congratulations and welcome back to Dr. Gibson!

 

July, 2011: Kristie Kava, PT, MS, DScPT, OMPT, will present at the Performing Arts Medical Association conference in Aspen, Colorado. The presentation will discuss injury prevention for musicians.

 

April, 2011: Linda Erickson, MS, PT, OMPT, attended the Michigan PTA Eastern District Meeting on April 30, 2011, which was held at Wayne State University.  She served as a lab instructor for a continuing education presentation lead by Professor Kim Dunleavy: "An Introduction to Pilates for Rehabilitation".

 

April, 2011: Kristie Kava, PT, MS, DScPT, OMPT, will chair a panel and present at the Michigan Physical Therapy Association conference in Lansing, MI. Her presentation explores the integration of the Pilates exercise method into physical therapy treatment programs for varied patient populations.
 
February, 2011: Linda Erickson, MS, PT, OMPT, attended a Rehabilitation Pilates course titled “Peripheral Joint Stabilization: Matwork & Reformer” in Bloomfield Hills, MI.
 
January, 2011: Dale Waltman, MPT, attended a course titled “Integrative Manual Approach to Lower Extremity Pain and Dysfunction.”
 
November, 2010: The staff of Oakland Physical Therapy received re-certification in CPR training.
 
September, 2010: Frank Kava, PT, MS, OCS, OMPT, attended the 20th annual Baltimore Limb Deformity Class in Baltimore, Maryland. This continuing education seminar focused on rehabilitative limb lengthening techniques to treat conditions resulting from congenital bone deformities and other special conditions.
 
June, 2010: Beth Burkel, DPT, completed the certificate program in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy from Oakland University.
 
April, 2010: Frank Kava, PT, MS, OCS, OMPT, attended a sports medicine symposium in New York led by the surgeons, physicians, and rehabilitation staff at the Hospital for Special Surgery. The courses emphasized evidence-based approaches to rehabilitation of the hip, knee, elbow, foot, ankle, lumbar vertebrae, and spine disorders.
 
Spring, 2010: Linda Erickson, MS, PT, OMPT, attended a Rehabilitative Pilates course titled “Spinal, Pelvic, and Scapular Stability: Matwork & Reformer” in Bloomfield Hills, MI.
 
November, 2009: Kristie Kava, PT, MS, DScPT, OMPT, presented her doctoral research in Manchester England. The study was titled, “Trunk Endurance Exercise and the Effect on Instrumental Performance: A Comparison of the Pilates Method and a Trunk and Proximal Upper Extremity Endurance Exercise Program.” This research was conducted while obtaining her doctorate from Oakland University.
 
April, 2009: Linda Erickson, MS, PT, OMPT, attended a seminar titled “Biomechanical Approach to Lower Quarter Strengthening” in Ann Arbor, MI.
 
June, 2008: Kristie Kava, PT, MS, DScPT, OMPT, presented her doctoral research at the Performing Arts Medical Association conference in Aspen, Colorado.
 
February, 2008: Kristie Kava, PT, MS, DScPT, OMPT, became a certified Stott Pilates Instructor, and has recently certified as a Rehabilitative Pilates Instructor.
